Our Firm

Advocating for the cannabis community since 2006

Anthony Law Group specializes in business and commercial law, regulatory compliance, and government affairs for the cannabis industry.

With a team of industry-experienced attorneys and policy professionals, Anthony Law Group helps cannabis organizations to get licensed, maintain compliance, and develop their long-term strategic plans in California's complex cannabis market.

In its first year, Anthony Law Group famously represented Harborside in their successful bid for one of two fiercely sought-after dispensary permits. Having grown along with the industry over the past decade, the firm continues to advocate for world-class organizations and homegrown startups alike.

Deeply committed to building an equitable cannabis industry, Anthony Law Group engages with local governments to demand sensible cannabis policy. We have worked closely with city and county governments throughout California to shape cannabis-friendly laws and regulations, and have assisted cannabis operators and investors of all kinds to navigate the California legal and business landscape.

Our Team

Skilled attorneys and public policy professionals

Anthony Law Group comprises a complementary group of skilled attorneys and public policy professionals whose insights and experience with cannabis provide clients with the resources they need to achieve long-term success in the industry.

James Anthony

A leading cannabis attorney and political strategist, James is an expert in legal, regulatory and government affairs matters affecting the cannabis industry.

In 2006, James started his private law practice, which was the first in California to specialize in civil and land-use matters related to cannabis. Backed by his experience as Oakland Deputy City Attorney and steeled by his passion for drug-policy activism, James was singularly suited to the task.

From serving on the Board of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, to having written countless winning applications, James has dedicated his career to the cannabis industry. In his book, The Cannabis Manifesto, Harborside founder and industry icon Steve DeAngelo calls James a "brilliant strategist and steadfast advocate, without whom Harborside might never have been licensed."

James is a longtime faculty member at Oaksterdam University and, as a practitioner of zen koan meditation since 1980, occasionally teaches at Pacific Zen Institute. His life was forever changed for better with the birth of his daughter in 2000.

Drew Sanchez

As an experienced civil litigator, business attorney and seasoned cannabis stakeholder, Drew has an intimate understanding of the needs of new and established cannabis businesses.

Drew was born and raised in the Bay Area, where he has been practicing law for the past 8 years. After graduating from Santa Clara University School of Law, he began practicing exclusively in civil litigation as a solo practitioner. He then transitioned into a top-tier plaintiff’s firm in San Francisco where he became an accomplished civil litigator. After that, he transitioned to an inside counsel role for a California  cannabis corporation. Following this time, he established his own firm and prepared several successful cannabis applications in California. He also founded and licensed Jingletown Cannabis Club, a medical cannabis collective which was recently named one of the top dispensaries in the East Bay by High Times.

Drew is a father and a member of the Free Masons. He grew up speaking Spanish and has been a long-time advocate for the Latinx community.  He stays sane by playing and performing old-time and folk music in the American tradition.
